"Army Nodes Increase"
December 2005 Issue
SIGNAL Magazine, "NewsNet" section
The U.S. Army is expanding its implementation of the Joint Network Node (JNN) initiative (SIGNAL Magazine, September 2005, page 65) with the purchase of 157 trailer-based satellite terminals. The JNN currently is providing portable communications capability to the 3rd Infantry Division, 101 st Airborne Division, 4th Infantry Division and 10th Mountain Division in Iraq. The expansion will ring the JNN to the 1st Cavalry Division, the 25th Infantry Division, the 82nd Airborne Division and to several Army National Guard units.
The Army equipment is based on two custom versions of DataPath Incorporated's (www.datapath.com) ET Model 3000 Portable. It provides a mobile satellite telecommunications platform that can be configured in the Ku-band frequency and for simultaneous single channel per carrier/time division multiple access carrier transmission. The model 3000 enables secure robotic voice and data communications in the absence of infrastructure and is a tactical gateway to battalions for "communications on the quick halt."
The equipment is being provided through the Army's Communications & Electronics Command, Fort
Monmouth, New Jersey. DataPath also will be providing technical support, training and spare systems.
